Would pesky Microsoft 365 bugs affect your business?

In the past few days, there have been multiple instances of Microsoft 365 running into either bug issues, or being targeted by malicious hackers looking to cause a nuisance as always. The first issue to crop up was hackers targeting Microsoft 365 accounts, using a phishing-as-a-service (PhaaS) platform known as Mamba 2FA.

The article (which can be found here https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/new-mamba-2fa-bypass-service-targets-microsoft-365-accounts/) gets into the nitty gritty details about how this attack works, but to put it simply it’s stealing your login credentials and authentication cookies. Even with 2FA enabled, it’s bypassing it entirely, which shows that you shouldn’t shy away from adding another layer of protection in the form of a third-party backup.

On top of hackers targeting the accounts, Microsoft themselves have been responsible for other less serious issues, as bugs in their software have been causing users inconvenience. A bug with Word would cause users saved files to be deleted if the filename included a # symbol, or if the file extension was capitalised. Either of those things can be extremely common when we name our files, therefore, the amount of people the issue could affect is no small number.

Outlook on the other hand had its bugs that were plaguing users’ computers, one that caused desktop app crashes, high system resource usage and prevented users from being able to log in to their accounts. Now while these issues have both been fixed by Microsoft since their discovery, they’re sure to still have caused some losses for people and their business. What if one of the files that was saved was a highly important document, that was wiped away just because of a single character in the file name?

We’ve told you all time and time again that Microsoft 365 isn’t backed up, and Microsoft themselves even recommend that you source a third-party backup. Backup Systems is your go to safely backing up your Microsoft 365, which includes Outlook, SharePoint, and OneDrive. These apps are an integral part of your day-to-day work life, and as such you should ensure they are correctly and securely backed up. If you came into work one day and fire up your computer, only to find that Word has deleted your documents instead of saving them, you’d be panicking. Microsoft wouldn’t be the ones to contact to recover that file, it would be us.
