The most common backup mistakes, and how to avoid them.

Every day, one small mistake could potentially lead to irreversible damage to your systems. Whether it’s down to user error or a lack of protection, threats can come in many forms and the best option for you to do is to have a backup. But even with some measures in place, many mistakes can still be made that can jeopardise your systems. Let’s dive into some common backup mistakes, as well as what can be done to avoid them causing you problems in the long run.

The most obvious one would be thinking that you don’t even need a backup to begin with, or that one is already there. For example, Microsoft has in their in small print that they aren’t responsible for any data lost due to downtime, and recommend you source a third-party backup. So, while you might think Office 365 is reputable of course Microsoft would backup up your documents, think again. It’s not just Office 365, your entire infrastructure should be safely and securely backed up, because if that goes down how will you recover? The last thing you want to do is be responsible for an entire business crumbling due to not having a correct backup measure in place.

Another mistake to make would be to only have one backup, while you might have one on-site, there is still potential for that backup to be lost or corrupt. You should always source an additional third-party backup, one that is offsite and is unaffected if your systems were to be the victim of a cyber-attack. This means you’d be able to restore from a backup, getting you back up to speed to how your systems were before an attack. You also have the benefit of these backups being handled by someone else, making it stress-free and less hassle for you to have increased security it’s a no-brainer.

Not updating your security as well as your software can lead to you becoming vulnerable, these updates are often rolled out to fix vulnerabilities that may have been discovered. While a backup would help in this regard, the idea would be to not have to go through a restore in the first place. Having a backup doesn’t mean you can neglect your system’s security and be reckless, you should keep your software updated whenever an update is made available, while also making sure to follow normal security practices such as watching what links you visit and what email attachments you open.
