What’s your outlook on backing up emails?
Where would we be without outlook? Without question, it’s a vital tool in the workplace, playing a key role for communication in our daily work life. Thousands of emails containing confidential information, or with important files attached are sent on a daily basis. It would be a nightmare if you were to lose access to such an important part of your business, which means that ensuring it’s backed up shouldn’t even be a question. With the current ongoings with Microsoft and Outlook, you can no doubt believe that there’s no better time than now, to secure an email archive with Backup Systems. But what is happening at the moment that would cause you to loose email access? Let’s find out.
CISA recently warned U.S. federal agencies that their systems need to be secured, due to ongoing attacks that were specifically targeting Microsoft Outlook, as a remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability was discovered. This type of cyber attack is one of the more dangerous ones, a hacker can gain remote access to your system, leaving them to practically do whatever they want. They would have full access to your computer, being able to install whatever they want on it without you even being aware. Ransomware would be the obvious choice for the attacker, encrypting your entire system, and locking it behind a paywall demanding a hefty amount for you to regain potential access.
You would have no access to your computer, let alone your emails, all thanks to clicking a malicious link. Outdated versions of outlook are the cause of this, another reminder that updating your software isn’t just to be annoying, it’s to protect your system. If you don’t pay the ransom and don’t have a backup, you’re starting from scratch. Emails stored on the affected system if not backed up would be gone forever.

Another incident that happened was Hewlett Packard Enterprise suffered a cyber-attack, where data was stole from the company’s Office 365 email environment. Both these stories being reported so close to each other, are a strong argument that your emails need to be protected, as well as the software you’re using. Correct care should be taken when clicking links on emails, even from trusted sources. Software should be up to date and correctly backed up, as even Microsoft themselves have it in their agreement, that they aren’t liable for any disruption or loss you may suffer as a result of outages to its online services. They also say you may not be able to retrieve stored content or data. The full service agreement can be read here – https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/servicesagreement.
